General Anesthesia
Fasting: Patients should not eat or drink anything (including water) for at least 8 hours prior to the procedure to reduce the risk of aspiration during sedation. However, it’s usually acceptable to take prescribed medications with a small sip of water during this fasting period.
Medication: Unless instructed otherwise, continue taking your regular medications with a small sip of water. Inform your provider about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, before the procedure.
Transportation: Arrange for a responsible adult (No Uber/Lyft) to accompany the patient to the appointment and drive them home afterward. We request that the driver remains on the premises during the entire appointment. Patients should not drive, operate heavy machinery, or make important decisions for at least 24 hours after general anesthesia.
Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing to the appointment. Remove all jewelry, piercings, and metal objects before the procedure to ensure safety and easy access for monitoring devices and IV placement. Nail polish or nail varnish can impact our monitors, so it is best to remove the polish from at least one finger before the procedure.
Health Conditions: Please inform your healthcare provider of any medical conditions, allergies, or past adverse reactions to anesthesia. Additionally, it’s essential to disclose if you are actively experiencing symptoms of a cold or flu, as these may adversely affect the anesthesia process.
Substance Use: Refrain from consuming alcohol, smoking, vaping, or using marijuana for at least 3 days before the procedure.
Follow Instructions: Patients should carefully follow any additional instructions provided by their healthcare provider regarding pre-procedure preparation.
It’s essential for patients to understand and adhere to these instructions to ensure a safe and successful procedure with IV sedation or general anesthesia.
