Post-Operative Instructions for Oral Surgery Procedures

We hope you’re resting comfortably after your surgery at Maxillo-Facial Surgery Institute, Irvine. To ensure a smooth recovery, please follow these personalized instructions:

Swelling Management: Reduce swelling by applying an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the affected area for 15 minutes every hour during the first day. Swelling may initially increase and peak around day 3 or 4 before gradually decreasing.

Bleeding: Apply gentle pressure by biting down on the gauze provided for 30 minutes to control bleeding. Replace it as needed.

Pain Management: Take prescribed pain medication as directed. Remember, it’s easier to manage pain before it becomes severe.

Diet: Start with soft, cool foods like yogurt, smoothies, and mashed potatoes for the first 24 hours. As tolerated, gradually advance your diet to include more firm foods. Start with softer options and slowly introduce firmer foods as your comfort allows.

Rest and Relaxation: Allow yourself to rest for the remainder of the day. Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting.

Avoid Heavy Exercise: Refrain from engaging in heavy exercise or strenuous physical activity for at least one week following the extraction.

Oral Hygiene: Gently brush your teeth, avoiding the extraction site. Rinse your mouth gently with prescription rinse or warm salt water after 24 hours twice a day for one to two weeks.

Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid using straws for one week as they can dislodge the blood clot.

Smoking and Alcohol: Refrain from smoking and alcohol consumption for at least 1 week to promote healing.
